Bulk insulation and reflective insulation are the two main categories. Bulk insulation works by trapping layers of air within the material. The many pockets of air provide a combined effect at slowing the heat transfer. Reflective insulation simply reflects heat and can also act as a vapour barrier. Reflective foil in ceilings stops over 90% of the radiant heat transfer.
