Cut your energy costs further with Tariff 33

If you own a pool or medium to large sized hot water system and want to save money on your electricity bills, then this article is for you.

Everything that uses electricity in and around your home is connected to a tariff that indicates to your power company the rate you should be charged for the electricity you use. There are a number of different tariffs available and if you live in Queensland, your lighting, power and hot water (if it is continuous), is most likely connected to Tariff 11.

Another easy way to save money on your electricity bills, apart from solar, is to switch the appliances that use a lot of electricity, such as your hot water and pool, to a different tariff.

Tariff 33, also known as the ‘off peak’ or ‘economy’ tariff, was introduced as a way to encourage people to use electricity away from the residential peak demand periods. This tariff can be applied to medium to large sized electric storage water heaters, solar-electric water heaters, pool pumps and heat pump water heaters. You can also use this tariff for other domestic loads such as swimming pool filters, chlorinators and chlorine dispensing units, water bed heaters and some freezers, provided they are permanently connected.

What makes this tariff so special is the price per unit of electricity is much cheaper. At only 13.67c/kWh inc. GST, it can save you up to 40% more per year compared to the normal domestic tariff (tariff 11) which charges 22.76c/kWh inc. GST. By simply switching your pool pump and hot water system to Tariff 33, you could reduce your energy bill by up to $120 – $300 per year and for a little extra encouragement, Ergon and ENERGEX are even offering a rebate cash back of $250 – $350.

If you have solar, your savings will be further increased and if you are still considering installing, you will be able to install a smaller more affordable solar system.

The reason why Tariff 33 is cheaper than the normal domestic tariff is that the electricity supply is only available for 18 hours per day and is switched via load control equipment supplied and maintained by ENERGEX. This means that during peak demand times of 6 – 9am or 4 – 8pm, Tariff 33 doesn’t operate. However, the times of supply are at ENERGEX’s discretion and on some days electricity supply may not be turned off at all. So, if you can refrain from using these appliances during these times, Tariff 33 is a great solution for you.

Auzion reaches out to Mackay

After making their mark on South East Queensland, Auzion have headed North, opening up offices in Rockhampton, Townsville, Gladstone and now Mackay.

Shortly after their arrival in Mackay, Auzion met with St Pauls Uniting Church and signed them up for a 5kW Auzion PV solar system.

During negotiations, Auzion had seen the great work the church was doing to assist the homeless people of Mackay and wanted to support this great initiative.

“Auzion believes strongly about being involved in the communities in which we operate,” Auzion CEO, Mark Leckenby said.

“It was especially important for me to support this project, having grown up in Mackay,” Mark said.

As part of the arrangement, for every person that signs up and installs an Auzion solar PV system in Mackay, Auzion will donate $300 to the Church’s ‘Street Ministry’ Program, an effort to help support the homeless people of Mackay.

“We often find homeless people sleeping on the steps of the church, even though there is no official homeless shelter there,” Ken Whyte said.

“Our program provides a range of support services including advice on housing and dealing with Centrelink, providing essentials such as food and clothing and general assistance with whatever they may need,” Ken said.

In the 2011 QCOSS Regional Homelessness Profile, it was found that more than 4% of Mackay’s population were homeless, a much higher homeless proportion than the rest of Queensland.

“There seems to be two extremes in Mackay – the very wealthy and the extreme poor,” Ken said.

“I believe the homeless situation is so high, particularly for mining towns like Mackay, because of all the marriage breakups due to the added stress on relationships with husbands travelling away to work,” Ken siad.

“Many of the people we help are not just homeless, but also suffer from mental health problems and alcohol and drug dependencies,” Ken said.

“We also work with many children and teenagers that believe they are better off on the street than being at home,” Ken said.

“All the money received from Auzion will help us continue to provide our vital services and also help to restock our food bank that we run out of the church,” Ken said.

“As a voluntary not-for-profit organisation, we are always looking for funding to enable us to continue to provide support to others,” Ken said.

The importance of quality inverters

Using a quality inverter is the key to getting the most out of your Solar PV System.

Auzion supports Sunshine Coast Cleantech Industry with mission trip

In the first Sunshine Coast Council mission trip to Melbourne, Auzion CEO Mark Leckenby met with the Cleantech industry in Melbourne to pitch the benefits of a clean technologies business on the Sunshine Coast.

He joined the councilor for economic development Lew Brennan, who led the mission, the council’s chief executive John Knaggs and the chair of Cleantech Industries Sunshine Coast, Bruce Napier.

The trip was backed by Council’s new business strategy which aims to expand the high amount of cleantech businesses on the Sunshine Coast. It has identified stable companies that were looking for investment opportunities.

The mission provided the opportunity to outline what the region has to offer to interstate businesses and to make initial introductions.

In the first of many “investment roadshows”, Sunshine Coast Council will target clean technology and renewable energy firms with the aim to bring investment and jobs to the region. It will also make the Sunshine Coast less dependent on the tourism and construction industries that have both faced challenges in recent years.

This has provided an ideal opportunity for Mark Leckenby to demonstrate the benefits of operating a cleantech business on the Sunshine Coast and the success of Auzion to Melbourne-based businesses.

“It’s great to see the council supporting clean technology on the Sunshine Coast,” Mark said.

More than 30 Melbourne-based businesses that either have an interest in investing elsewhere or have trade relationships with clean technology businesses already will be presented with the opportunity.

The council’s business strategy recognises that start-up or expansion costs for companies can be challenging so three types of incentives will be available to businesses upon relocating to the Sunshine Coast including deferred rates and cash grants.

The timing of the mission was ideal as the Coast is set to host the Clean Futures Conference on October 28 and there is already keen interest from some businesses in Victoria for opportunities on the Coast.

My wife and I are very happy with the installation and this is why we had no hesitation in recommending your services to our friends in Woombye. Grey Nomads on the adventure of a lifetime can fund their new lifestyle by turning their idle homes into power stations, while also increasing the value of their homes, with solar power.

According to the experts at Auzion Solar Power, solar power is the perfect short and long-term investment for grey nomads and others who leave their homes on extended trips.

“Solar power is at its most cost efficient when you maximise the energy fed back into the grid,” Auzion CEO, Mark Leckenby said.

“For most households this means trying to reduce the energy used throughout daylight hours but when you are away on holidays, your household uses very little or no electricity.

“This means, that all the energy you don’t use while your home is unoccupied will be fed back into the grid and bought off you by your energy supplier at a premium rate,” Mark said.

“So while the cost of energy is set to continue increasing, installing solar makes sense for everyone, for travelers the investment is even more of a no-brainer because the additional power generated means they will pay their systems off much sooner.”

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grey Nomads make up one of the fastest growing groups in domestic tourism and predict that by 2050, the number of Grey Nomads will be more than double the thousands setting off in Australia this year.

The typical Grey Nomad sets off in their caravans, motor homes, campervans and converted buses on average three times a year for 14.5 weeks at a time, leaving their home vacant for the majority of the year.

“This means, depending on the size of your system, you could make back your investment much faster and look forward to greatly reduced power bills, or even a cheque instead.”

Self-confessed part time grey nomads and Auzion customers Paul and Pauline from the Sunshine Coast installed a 3kW Auzion PV Solar System on their home in July and are already experiencing the benefits.

“We travel for three to four months of the year and saw solar as a good return on investment, far better than the return we would receive from having our money in the bank,” Paul said.

“My wife and I recently returned from a four week holiday and while we were away, our system fed 344kW back to the grid and at 50c per kW with Origin, we have already made $172 in just one month,” Paul said.

“We are both retired pensioners, so is it nice having the assurance that we won’t be faced with another power bill,” Paul said.

Mark said many Grey Nomads live off superannuation, savings and government benefits and therefore have to ‘stretch their money’ further as they continue to draw their savings down.

“Solar is a great way for these price-conscious nomads to make some extra cash and depending on their system size, they could earn well over $1,000 per year which is a whole lot of income for doing virtually nothing,” Mark said.

Auzion Dolphins win grand final

The Kawana Dolphins U14 Rugby League team, proudly sponsored by Auzion, played an exceptional game on the weekend to take out the grand final against the Caboolture Snakes.

The winning game was played on Saturday, 10 September with a final score of 40 – 10 and is the second year running the team has won the premiership.

In fact, all seven Kawana teams competing in grand finals on the weekend were successful, and as a result, Kawana has been named the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League Champion Club for 2011.

Auzion’s Wholesale Manager, Brad Homan said the team played fantastic throughout the entire season and to win the grand final was a great reward for all their hard work.

“Auzion are really proud to have sponsored such a great group of kids,” Brad said.

Coach, Parrish McLeod said the team was really appreciative for all the support they had received from Auzion.
